Yeh Kya KIA

KIA- Knowledge initiative on agriculture.

Indo US Agriculture deal has a technical term KIA.
The deal has largely been kept out of mainstream media, and there are reasons to believe that not a lot of effort must have gone into it.
Congress has a knack for hiding the real issues; BJP has nothing to do with the farmers so this is no plank. Rests of them don’t matter.
There was too much of brouhaha over the nuclear deal, power being the main issue, of utility on to media clients living in the cities, who also do not give a damn about the farm issue. Who think, that singur farmers are stupid to oppose industrialization.

The corporatisation of farm sector is happening in the backdrop of these events.
And look who is on the board? Monsanto, Wal-Mart, Archer Daniels Midland, FICCI, CII and our own ITC. They are deciding the nature of the treaty and would advice on the bills to be placed.

As the issue does not rake up public rage, like there are few vested interest groups to promote the idea, there are fewer vested opposing groups and individuals.

Where the promoting group would insist on tougher IPR laws, ushering of GM food and transgenic.
The opposed are usually egotist, myopic who is yelling only to be heard. No facts to figures, just shouting. Once heard they would be the first ones to roll the dice.
It’s an old trick, to have some naysayer who would turn the tables when push comes to shove.
Like for the Congress to come back in power, they desperately need the BJP to sing the hardliner Hindu tune. Why else would the minority consolidate?
That is the case with the policy on Indian agriculture. Woven in deep socialist conspiracy, the stage for the multinationals to play unscrupulous games is set.

The point is there is no this side or that side to support. Indian Agriculture and Farmers are consumers and suppliers like any other business. They are no fools who cant fend for themselves, they will grow what the market demands, and use only those components in their production which is best suited to their interest.
Any interference from any law will obviously be of no benefit to the industry, farmer or consumer.

A normal demand- supply should rule the industry and all consumers no what is best for them.
Monsanto or any other company can not sell, GM Seeds if the farmers wish to grow Organic, and that will be the case only if the consumers want to consume only organic.

Yes, if the corporates make the touts of democracy agreeable that, the consumer or the farmer is incapable of taking this decision, let their be law that only a certain type of Maize seed be allowed to be sold in the market. So a few companies can rake big money. and the rest will have to take the black market.
India is already consuming, tons of GM seeds, smuggled from china. All pop corn kernels coming into India are from the US and need no certification for GM or anything else.
Only, thing that an organized body like the Government can do is to disseminate information, allow free movement of goods, trade, people, ideas and information.
